There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties . . . This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution. John Adams in a letter to Jonathan Jackson, 1780

After watching the national embarrassment of our President and Speaker of the House behave like five-year-olds before the world this week, I was reminded of this famous quote from John Adams on his fears over what a two-party system would mean for the country. Interestingly most of the Founders have similar views . [Click here for other Founders’ quotes on political parties]. Having no political parties is a utopia that can probably never exist. But the asinine level of partisanship today is beginning to do real damage to our republic.
